Plattform Produktion was co-founded by producer Erik Hemmendorff and director Ruben Östlund in 2002. The aim for the company they set up was to prove to the industry that you could produce in a different way. With the new digital cameras and editing, it was possible to produce high quality Swedish films with a strong singular signature. Films that found a Swedish- and international audience.  Since then Plattform has established itself as one of Sweden’s leading independent production companies. In 2010, the company expanded, bringing on Axel Danielson, Mikel Cee Karlsson, and Kalle Boman as partners. Today, Erik Hemmendorff serves as the CEO, Pernilla Sandström serves as the Head of Production, and Ludwig Källén manages post-production. 

From its inception, Plattform has been devoted to carefully developing talent and to establish long term relationships with directors and creators. The company has produced a number of multi-award-winning films including TRIANGLE OF SADNESS (2022) and THE SQUARE (2017), both of which won The Palme d’Or in Cannes and were nominated for Academy Awards (THE SQUARE: 2018 nominee for Best Foreign Film; TRIANGLE OF SADNESS: 2022 nominee for Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Director).

The company’s recent releases include Axel Danielson and Maximilien Van Aertryck’s FANTASTIC MACHINE (Sundance Creative Vision Award 2023); Ninja Thybergs breakout PLEASURE (Cannes Official Selection 2020 and Sundance Official Selection 2021); and Mia Hansen-Løve’s BERGMAN ISLAND (Cannes Official Selection 2021), a co-production shot on location in Fårö, Sweden. Other notable films include A TIGER IN PARADISE (CPH:DOX Competition 2023), SWEET DREAMS (Locarno Competition 2023) A STRANGER (CPH:DOX Competition 2019), SÄSONG (Winner CPH:DOX Competition 2019), PLAY (Cannes Directors Fortnight 2011), INVOLUNTARY (Cannes Un Certain Regard 2008), THE GUITAR MONGOLOID (Moscow IFF Competition 2004), 53 SCENES FROM A CHILDHOOD (Rotterdam 2011). Since the start, Plattform Produktion has won eight European Film Awards, been nominated for four Academy Awards, and won over a hundred international prizes.

In addition to features, Plattform Produktion has a history of producing award-winning short films. INCIDENT BY A BANK (2009) won the Berlinale’s Golden Bear in 2010. FIGHT ON A SWEDISH BEACH!! (2016) competed for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2016. And the documentary TEN METER TOWER (2016) premiered at the Berlinale before moving on to compete in over 100 festivals including Sundance and Palm Springs and winning both the Jury and Audience Awards in Clermont-Ferrand as well as 14 other prizes. Millions saw the film online when the New York Times’ featured it in their Op-Docs series, and it has been acquired by the Finnish Museum of Modern Art and exhibited at the Venice Biennale.
